Traditional healing, traditional medicine and the prevalence of witchdoctors is a serious concern in Mozambique. We are referring to individuals like Sangoma’s who employ the use of spirits and traditional healing to treat ailments and other problems. According to one of our sources, many Mozambican witchdoctors are recognised and registered as alternative medicine practitioners by AMETRAMO (Association of Traditional Medics of Mozambique). This documentation allows them to practice traditional healing legally as a contemporary medic would.

In rural Mozambique, the average Mozambican cannot afford to visit the hospital or a general practitioner. Supplies are also not always readily available, and locals have better confidence in “spirits”, than in prescriptions from pharmacies. They see traditional healers as a quick and easy solution to their problems and do not know any better. Our station manager from the Niassa province brought it to our attention that thousands of women die while giving birth, because of the lack of sanitation and proper equipment in hospitals – an issue that our station regularly addresses.

Traditional healing presents itself as harmless alternative using herbal remedies to cure general ailments, infections, and illnesses, but it also has a dark spiritual side. Some consult traditional healers to try and alter their circumstances, and even to do harm to others. Very concerning is the fact that many traditional healers legally carry out physically and spiritually ominous practices under the guise of harmless, “traditional medicine”.

Through our ministry in Mozambique, 10 traditional healers who practiced witchcraft – accepted Christ as their Lord and Saviour. They left their old life behind and have devoted themselves to being discipled. They are now learning how to sew so that they can become tailors.  They often accompany our team on outreaches and are being taught how to evangelise as they grow in their faith.
