Many animals are sadly put down, lives snuffed out for one reason – they are unwanted. I had my fair share of the practice of animal euthanasia – I never felt good about it. Actually, it is an awful thing to do and I tried to brush the guilty feelings away that I had in two instances. For a long time I did not know if I had done the right thing and if there was an alternative solution for the animals.
A second chance
When I recently listened to the incredible story of Roman McConn and how he saves animals, I became convinced that I had twice made a terrible mistake by having animals put down. Roman lives in the USA and was awarded “Kid of the year” by the ASPCA after rescuing more than 1300 dogs since he was 4 years old. Through his intervention, animals who were listed for euthanasia in shelters were given a second chance.
How does he do that? His mother records a video where he plays with a dog or a cat and posts it on their Facebook page called “Project Freedom Ride.” Because these videos are so adorable and widely circulated, it happens that in every case the animal gets adopted. The shelter staff says that Roman McConn is a real animal whisperer. He has compassion and has learnt skills beyond his years.

Dogs shouldn’t live in cages
Roman had this to say after volunteering at shelters, “Dogs do not need to be in a shelter, they need to do things.” I agree with him. Many innocent animals are locked up in cages as if they are criminals, and for long periods at a time, because nobody wants them. Animals deserve to be free. Dogs especially are active and social, and they need to interact with humans and animals.

We need to show love for animals
Children naturally enjoy animals unless taught otherwise. We need to deliberately foster love for animals in children and speak to them about the plight of animals. Volunteer at an animal shelter or rescue an animal in a dismal condition from the street. It is one of the most rewarding things to do in this world. Your children will learn kindness and compassion, virtues desperately needed in a society gone wrong. And, you will be rewarded with seeing the sweet delight of your child’s face when they happily cuddle an animal who has been rescued, restored, and placed in a decent and loving home.
