One idiom says, “A fine is a tax for doing something wrong, while a tax is a fine for doing something right.” But the fact remains that without taxes our society would crumble. Whatever institution we are involved in, paying taxes is the right thing to do.
The risks of tax evasion
Evading taxes is an economic crime against the state and fellow citizens. You may ask, how is that a crime? A good place to start is understanding why it is important to pay taxes. It is not only a legal requirement, but also the civic duty of every devoted citizen. The money that we pay towards taxes is the engine that keeps the country running. Our taxes go towards the financing of various bills that we collectively share as a nation. This includes paying the salaries of the civil servants working in government departments, the police force, teachers who work in government schools, and nurses and doctors who work in government hospitals.
Tax is necessary for a well-run nation
Our taxes also help fund the building and maintenance of
public resources such as government schools, hospitals, libraries, parks, roads, and community facilities. One of our biggest costs in a nation are the social grants that are paid out to the disabled, the aged, and children.
The South African government must not betray the citizens
Whilst all taxpayers are being implored to ensure that they “give to Caesar what is due unto Caesar” (Matt 22:21), “Caesar” is also implored to use what is given to him with great care. Citizens are paying taxes from their hard-earned income and any misappropriation of state funds – through corruption and poor decision making – is unforgivable. It is a betrayal to the citizens of South Africa. Furthermore, the recipients of social grants are also being implored to use the grants wisely.
Be honest and responsible
Devoted citizens take responsibility in making personal decisions that will not impact the nation negatively. As French philosopher Albert Camus famously said, “Taxation is the price which civilised communities pay for the opportunity of remaining civilised”.
