“She gave birth to her firstborn, a son … and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” – Luke 2:7
I don’t know about you, but every year I find myself wanting less and less of the noise and more of the stillness that Christmas is meant to carry. Somewhere along the line, the season became more about lists, pressure, parties, and presents than it did about the Person at the centre of it all. This year, I’m longing for a different kind of Christmas. One that’s a little quieter, a little simpler, and a whole lot more intentional.
Less fuss, more meaning
Here at JOY!, we start working on our Christmas issue as early as October (yes, really!). We love Christmas – the music, the lights, the warmth, the joy. Our office fills with carols that honour Christ, and we spend weeks surrounded by nativity stories, Christmas devotions, and meaningful reflections. But by the time December arrives, I often find myself craving stillness. After months of seeing decorations go up in shops, hearing about Frosty the Snowman and Santa in every retail space, and watching the busyness of the season build and build, I start to feel weary of the festive noise. It’s easy to get swept up in the sparkle, the rush, and the pressure to make everything perfect. But that can never be what Christmas is about. We don’t need to overspend, overcommit, or overdecorate to make the season meaningful (though I’ll always love a beautifully wrapped gift and a twinkling tree!). Jesus was born in a manger, not a palace. His birth was simple, raw, and holy. If the King of Kings came into the world without grandeur, maybe our Christmases should reflect that too.
Serve, don’t stress
It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of shopping, cooking, hosting, and ticking off to-do lists. But what if we slowed down just enough to notice who actually needs love this season? Philippians 2:4 reminds us, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Instead of trying to do it all, what if we simplified – and focused on making room for others? Here are a few small but meaningful ways to serve during the season:
- Bake something simple and deliver it to a neighbour, your local police station, or an elderly couple in your area.
- Write handwritten notes or Christmas cards with actual words of encouragement – not just signatures.
- Keep a few thoughtful extras on hand – a chocolate, a candle, a devotional booklet – to bless someone unexpectedly.
- Invite someone into your home who might otherwise be alone. You don’t have to put on a show – just offer warmth, a meal, and presence.
- Pray intentionally – ask the Lord each morning to highlight one person you can bless that day, and be ready to act on it.
These aren’t extravagant gestures – but they carry the heart of Christmas. When we shift our focus from performance to presence, the season becomes lighter, more holy, more meaningful, and more joyful.
Centre it on Christ
At the end of the day, Christmas is all about Jesus – not because it’s a tradition, but because it’s the moment when hope entered the world in the most unexpected and humble way. Isaiah 9:6 calls Him “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” That’s who we’re celebrating. In a world that’s desperate for peace, joy, and truth, we have the privilege of pointing others to the One who brings all three. And we don’t just celebrate Him – we honour Him. Christmas invites us to worship, to pause in reverence, and to remember the holiness of the moment. So light the candles, sing the carols, decorate the tree – but don’t forget to slow down. Be present. Spend time in the Word. Read the Christmas story. Pray with your family. Thank God for sending His Son. Let this season be holy, not just happy. It really can be a different kind of Christmas – if we choose it.
