Popular Port Elizabeth pastor, Jimmy Crompton, died on Sunday after a short illness. Crompton was 77 and passed peacefully in his sleep.

Richard Crompton, Jimmy’s son shared the following on Facebook:
“Hi everyone, unfortunately for us my Dad, Jimmy Crompton, has gone to meet Jesus. What a privilege to have known a man like that. He has been giant. Pastor Jimmy Crompton went to be with Jesus at 3:20am, 15 November 2020. He went peacefully after a short illness. The funeral and other arrangements will be announced on the Word of Faith Facebook page. Thank you for showing your love and care.”

Jimmy Crompton, also known as James Richard Crompton, was the senior pastor and visionary of Word of Faith Christian Centre in Port Elizabeth. Jimmy went into ministry in 1967, and celebrated 53 years in ministry this year.

Raised in a home where prophecy, miracles, and evangelism were part of everyday life, Jimmy loved Jesus from a very young age, yet his life was transformed at the age of 18 when he was baptised in the Holy Spirit and had a phenomenal encounter with the Lord. This encounter released Jimmy into ministry, as he started preaching in his school classrooms and on street corners – ever since, Jimmy has had a fire inside of him to unashamedly preach the Gospel and reach out to those around him.

In 1984, Jimmy started Word of Faith Christian Centre. This church was one of the first churches in South Africa that opened its doors to multiracial groups (defying the laws of apartheid), which led to the police barging in on multiple occasions to shut the services down. This was a heavy period in the church’s history, and Jimmy endured a spirit of heaviness on his soul, yet was delivered through this upon listening to a sermon by Derek Prince, based on Isaiah 61:3, which says to: “…Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness…” Jimmy adopted this attitude and garment of praise, which is one of the foundations of his ministry.

Jimmy’s life story and testimony has been published into an inspirational book titled “My Only Fight With The Devil” and is available for purchase through Word of Faith church. To order a copy, call 041 3994400 or email info@wordoffaith.org.za. Visit their website at www.wordoffaith.org.za
