A calling to leadership. Spiritual warfare. A leader’s toolbox. These are some of the topics discussed at FEBA International’s third Leadership Academy, which took place in Kenya between 30 July and 2 August 2024.
Sixty-six people from 13 countries gathered at the Lukenya Getaway on the Athi River for training and fellowship. Over the course of four days, leaders from FEBA in the USA, South Africa, Mongolia, Japan, Russia, and the Philippines shared their experience and FEBA’s leadership principles with a group of emerging leaders. Dr Jurie Vermeulen, national director of FEBA Radio SA, spoke about the apostle Paul’s leadership, as well as a leader’s general and specific callings. In addition to individual talks, there were opportunities to ask questions, and group discussions on topics such as the experience of pressure in leadership.
The guiding Bible verse for the conference was 2 Timothy 2:2 (NLT): “You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.”
FEBA spares no effort in equipping leaders with the tools and skills they need to excel despite the challenges they might face. Rebecca Kawale, who runs a children’s program for FEBA Malawi, feels she has benefited greatly from FEBA’s investment in its leaders. She says: “I had a breakthrough when I realised that leadership is not about having all the answers but asking the right questions. This shifted my approach from being a know-it-all to being a curious and collaborative leader.”
Good leadership is essential to a healthy organisation, but it requires time and effort to cultivate, because, in the words of Joshua Sun, one of the attendees from the USA: “We are not called because we are qualified, we are qualified because we are called.”
