OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg has celebrated the consecration of its new Christian Chapel in the centre of the landside Terminals. It is situated at Basement Level in Terminal A at the entrance to the parking.
This interdenominational Ministry was founded at the former Jan Smuts Airport in 1995 and has had two previous Chapel locations. It seeks to serve in priestly, pastoral and prophetic character, to all who work at or make use of airports and aviation in this country.
Now settled in the centre of the Airport it is more accessible to both staff, travellers and meeters and greeters. The Chapel, like the airport, is open 24 hours per day and is presently manned during certain hours, by volunteer clergy and members of local Churches.
The Chapel is a place where people can rest and refresh themselves, spending quiet time with God; they can join in the Services; they can enjoy discussions in a Bible Study Group or seek pastoral care if a chaplain is on duty.
Awareness of the Chapel facility has sadly been virtually unknown in the past two decades and it is hoped that with the new Chapel and the proposed new signage, Christians will be better served as they are able to locate The Gateway Chapel and enjoy a visit to God’s House at OR Tambo International Airport during their time there.
