St. John Berchmans Inter College, a Jesuit school and hostel located in India’s Jharkhand state, has appealed to the government for help following an attack last week.
On September 3rd, the school was attacked by a mob of Hindu extremists who damaged the facilities, beat students, sexually harassed female students, and attempted to prevent transportation of the injured to hospitals. The school is requesting that local and regional authorities take action.
However, India’s religious freedom record is increasingly dismal. Rather than holding abusers accountable, the government has allowed for the violent harassment and intimidation of Christians to continue. Attacks against Christians began increasing when the Hindu nationalist BJP party gained power in the 2014 elections. India rates as a Tier 2 Country of Concern by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.
