Could UK’s Next Leader Move Embassy To Jerusalem?

A leading politician in the UK said she would review moving her nation’s embassy to Israel’s capital if she is elected to serve as prime minister.

Liz Truss, who serves as Foreign Secretary and is running to lead the Tory party, recently stated that she would review moving the UK’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem if she is elected prime minister.

She made the promise in a letter this week addressed to members of Conservative Friends of Israel, the UK’s Jewish Chronicle (JC) reported.

“Regarding the embassy, Ms. Truss said she understood the ‘importance and sensitivity’ over where it was located and had discussed the issue several times with her ‘good friend,’ [Israeli interim prime minister Yair] Lapid. While stopping short of committing to a move, her announcement of a review is the furthest any leading [UK] politician already holding high office has gone on the matter,” reported the JC.

If Truss is elected and she makes good on her promise, the UK would join the United States, Guatemala, and other counties in moving their diplomatic headquarters to Jerusalem. Several other countries announced they are, or would consider, moving their diplomatic headquarters from Tel Aviv to Israel’s capital.

Truss also indicated that “all options are on the table” with regard to confronting the Iranian nuclear threat, should attempts to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement disintegrate.

Truss added, “My history of advocating for Israel on the world stage is clear. As Foreign Secretary it was a great honour to renew the UK’s commitment to Israel through a new UK-Israel Strategic Partnership alongside my counterpart Yair Lapid. The safety and security of Israel is of the utmost importance.”

In addition Truss said she stands behind Israel’s protest of the United Nations’ Special Committee investigating Israel. Evidence indicates the body is led by individuals pursuing a distinctly anti-Israel agenda, at least one of whom spread the antisemitic conspiracy that the “Jewish lobby” controls social media.

Truss called the committee “institutionally biased and a waste of money.” She added, “UN representatives with a history of antisemitic remarks should have no role in reviewing the activities of Israel.”
