“I am so excited about this great opportunity for church planters and established ministries.”

As a church planter and founder of City Life Church in Johannesburg, which was started almost 22 years ago, I have come to understand the critical importance of finding a strategic and affordable location to gather as a growing congregation. For most pastors this is one of the most difficult things to get right, especially in the founding years.

Lockdown has been hard
One thing the pandemic has definitely highlighted for most church leaders is the need to manage cash flow, especially when it comes to monthly financial commitments such as paid church staff and buildings rentals. During times of lockdown, many buildings have stood empty due to being unable to gather in person and yet, the onerous monthly payments have still been required regardless.

Finding the right venue is difficult
Even prior to the pandemic, many church leaders across South Africa found it increasingly difficult to find landlords who are willing to lease their buildings to churches, citing policy and bad experiences. Banks have also made it very difficult for churches to borrow money to buy buildings. Town planning and zoning issues have been another hurdle to navigate, even if a suitable premises is found.

A new opportunity!
In spite of these challenges, the Biblical mandate found in Hebrews 10:25 to not “forsake the gathering together of the Saints” is still paramount to every local church’s mission and mandate. That’s why I am so excited about this great opportunity for church planters and established ministries across South Africa. If you are looking for the right location to hold church services, plant a church, or increase your number of locations across your city, I believe this is an opportunity you should prayerfully consider.
