Waiting for her bus, Mary felt lost, alone, and was not in a good space. “Oh no,” she thought, nervously watching as a bakkie suddenly reversed towards her. What are the intentions of this man? He called her to the window and, cautiously, she moved close enough to hear, “Jesus loves you. He died for you and has a plan for your life,” and off he went.
Mary hurried to find a seat right at the back of the bus. Her mind was full of questions when suddenly, a lady dropped a piece of paper with a scripture written on it in her hand. “Could this be God?” Mary had so many disappointments in life and felt like there was no purpose for her existence…
Incurable disease
On the other side of the town Samuel, a single father of a beautiful daughter, found himself struggling to accept an incurable cancer of the blood. He was only skin and bone, as his condition deteriorated daily with no hope. He had spent months in hospital, going through bouts of chemotherapy with no improvement. Death was written all over his body.
For months Samuel never saw daylight as he felt chained to his hospital bed. Everyone prepared themselves for his death, doctors gave him no hope. Very sick with no strength, he was given permission to take one weekend off. Instead of going home he asked his uncle Eric, a friend’s father, if he could spend the weekend with them. Growing up without a father, uncle Eric was someone he looked up to.

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” – 1 John 4: 7
Divine connection
Over the weekend, uncle Eric spoke to him and introduced him to a Man called Jesus – the only one who could change his life. He led him to receive salvation. Samuel’s cousin and some friends came over to visit, and brought along Mary. She had not met Samuel before this encounter, but with the little strength he had, Samuel enjoyed the company. He went back to the hospital on the Sunday evening. The next day, Mary suddenly decided to visit Samuel in hospital. This meant that she needed to take two busses to get there; it was the beginning of daily visits to her new-found friend.
Good news finally came when a visiting Medical Professor from the USA came to visit the cancer ward. Samuel’s case would be the first that the Professor would look at. The doctor came over to meet him and asked about his journey. For the first time, he was given an actual diagnosis of a rare Myeloma Lymphoma. The doctor prescribed more chemo, together with a bone marrow transplant.

Unconditional love
Samuel suddenly realised that he was falling in love with Mary. His feelings grew stronger as his body grew weaker. One day while Mary was hosting a fundraiser for his medical bills, he sneaked out of hospital. That evening, he fell on his knees and asked for Mary’s hand in marriage.
Today, ten long years later, the couple are healthy, happy, deeply in love, and serve God together by coaching and mentoring others. We serve a Lord of miracles!
