The inspiring new film from Angel Studios, Cabrini, will be available in theaters in South Africa on International Women’s Day – 8 March.
The film is inspiring, positive, and wholesome. It is based on the true story of a woman, Francesca Cabrini, who was born in Northern Italy in 1850 and her fight for the equality, health, and happiness of Italians who at the time travelled to America as immigrants in the hope of a better life.
From Alejandro Monteverde, award-winning director of 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮, comes the powerful epic story of Cabrini, who arrives in New York City in 1889 and is greeted by disease, crime, and impoverished children. She sets off on a daring mission to convince the hostile mayor to secure housing and healthcare for society’s most vulnerable.
Inspiring legacy
In the course of 34 years, this brave nun eventually founded an astonishing 67 hospitals, orphanages and schools worldwide. Her energy was fuelled by an intense focus to serve Jesus in whatever he asked of her, and her legacy still stands today.
The film is all the more inspiring because Cabrini had to overcome tremendous obstacles: She almost drowned as a child and her parents were told that she would never reach adulthood, due to her poor health and the fact that she was a woman she was repeatedly thwarted in her calling to care for orphans and society’s most vulnerable. She was nevertheless unstoppable in her faith and grabbed the one chance she was offered.
Amidst chaos and poverty, Cabrini and her companions established schools, orphanages, hospitals, and organized religious classes throughout the United States. One of her most notable achievements includes founding the Sacred Heart Orphan Asylum for Italian immigrant children in rural West Park, New York, later renamed Saint Cabrini Home.

Cabrini died in Chicago in 1917 and was canonised as a saint by Pope Pius XII in 1946. She became the Patroness of Immigrants in 1950. Today, the institute that Cabrini founded continues to fulfil diverse roles as educators, nurses, social workers, administrators, and board members worldwide.
Cabrini stars among others, Cristiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah, Trust), John Lithgow (Third Rock from the Sun, Footloose, The Old Man), David Morse (The green mile, The rock, St. Elsewhere), Giancarol Giannini (Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale), and Federico Castelluccio (The Sopranos, El Cantante).
