After months of prayer and planning, FEBA has opened its new radio station in Chad.

RACE FM is based in the capital, N’Djamena, and broadcasts eight hours a day, seven days a week. Current programming is partly gospel but mainly cultural – music, dramas, humour, et cetera – to test the new broadcasting equipment while fulfilling licensing requirements.

Chad ranks among the 20 poorest countries in the world, with the majority of citizens engaging in subsistence farming. About one in five children under the age of five is underweight. More than 70% of adults are illiterate, and gender inequality is rife, especially in traditional communities, where a mixture of poverty and tradition causes approximately 24% of girls to be married off by the time they are 15 years old.

Even though about 44% of its 19 million people identify as Christian, mostly Roman Catholic, the country ranks 49th on Open Doors’ World Watch List because of the persecution of Christians in Muslim areas and the oppressive influence of jihadist activities that spill over into Chad from neighbouring countries.

RACE FM aims to bring change in Chad, one listener at a time. Its programs will offer a mix of evangelical content, such as interactive prayer programs and live broadcasts of different church services, with secular content such as music. The station is already drawing interest, with curious listeners visiting in response to broadcasts, and pastors seeking to collaborate with the team.

Unfortunately, the station has also drawn negative attention in the weeks since its launch, ranging from attempts to “discourage” the team, to sabotaging equipment. When asked about FEBA Chad’s prayer needs, Director Ayata says, “What we need is spiritual and moral support. Please pray that our Almighty Lord will give us the strength to hold on.”
