On 18 June, Mali held a national referendum on proposed changes to the constitution. While some voters are opposed to the idea, others hope that a new constitution will bring peace.
Peace is sorely needed. More than a decade of political turmoil has taken its toll on Mali, both economically and socially. Those not directly involved in the conflict, fear it will reach them soon. Media freedom is restricted. Still, radio prevails as the preferred medium of information and entertainment.
In homes and the marketplace
Amid the uneasiness about people’s safety and the future, FEBA Mali’s KanuYah FM Sollo keeps sharing hope and guidance with its listeners in six languages. Ministers keep up a lively follow-up ministry with regular visits to outlying communities to take them food and hold Bible studies. The team also undergoes frequent training to ensure they deliver excellence.
“The obviously strong impact of the healing and other prayers by our ministry … is invariably the subject of many comments among all the communities,” says M’Bimba Dembélé, FEBA Mali’s director. “We also continue to give away radio sets to listeners, in addition to the one-FM-radio-set prize given every week to the winner of the weekly Bible quizzes.”
Listeners are eager to share KanuYah FM with others. “At the marketplace … many people listen to the powerful radio set I have placed at the entrance to my shop,” writes a businesswoman who came to Christ through KanuYah FM’s programs. A café owner has the radio on KanuYah FM all day. “KanuYah FM Sollo is … so popular that it has led even non-Christians to like Christian songs, stories and dramas,” he says. “Above all, it is soothing hearts when many families are mourning their loved ones, killed in action.”
A retired schoolmaster, who enjoys discussing God with his visitors, shares, “[Although] it is impossible to tune in to Mali’s national radio station, nobody resents this fact, as everybody considers KanuYah FM Sollo to be the very best of all stations, even at national level. God bless KanuYah FM Sollo!”
