When Psalm 23 Becomes More Than a Familiar Passage
Few passages of Scripture are as familiar as Psalm 23. Its words have comforted generations through seasons of grief, uncertainty and fear. But what happens when we stop reading it simply as a beautiful passage of comfort and begin to see it as a roadmap for the realities of everyday life?
In The Shepherd’s Journey, Gerhard S. Kock takes readers on a verse-by-verse journey through Psalm 23, exploring how this ancient Psalm continues to speak into the challenges people face today.
Anxiety. Loss. Trauma. Uncertainty. Relationship struggles. A lack of direction. Questions about identity, meaning, security and hope.
These are not abstract theological questions. They are realities many people carry quietly every day.
Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in pastoral counselling, community work and training, Gerhard approaches Psalm 23 with a deep understanding of the questions people wrestle with in difficult seasons. For him, this Psalm is not merely a collection of familiar words. It has become a source of perspective and hope in his own life — and the heart of this book.
A Journey Through Psalm 23
The book follows the Psalm phrase by phrase, inviting readers to pause and consider what each image reveals about God and His relationship with His people.
From the opening declaration, “The Lord is my shepherd,” Gerhard explores what it means to trust God’s leadership when we do not know where the road ahead is taking us.
The journey continues through the green pastures and still waters, where the Shepherd provides rest and restoration; through the dark valleys, where fear and uncertainty can feel overwhelming; and into the presence of enemies, where God’s protection and provision remain steadfast.
Finally, the Psalm leads us towards the assurance of dwelling in the house of the Lord.
Along the way, The Shepherd’s Journey speaks to those who may feel stuck in the struggle — people who are simply trying to make it through the next day. Rather than offering shallow answers to complicated circumstances, Gerhard invites readers to look at their fears, inner battles and uncertainties through the lens of God’s presence and care.
At the centre of the book is a simple but powerful reminder: Psalm 23 is not primarily about strong sheep. It is about a faithful Shepherd.
The sheep do not have to have everything figured out. They do not have to know the way. They are called to follow the One who leads, restores, protects and provides.
From Reading to Living
One of the strengths of The Shepherd’s Journey is its practical approach. The book includes a reflection and application guide, making it suitable not only for personal reading and meditation, but also for small groups and Bible studies.
The aim is not simply to help readers become more familiar with Psalm 23. It is to help them live its truth.
What does it look like to trust the Lord as Shepherd when life feels uncertain? What does His presence mean when we walk through a valley? Where do we find rest when our minds refuse to be still? And how do we continue moving forward when we cannot see what lies ahead?
These are the kinds of questions The Shepherd’s Journey encourages readers to consider.
For anyone who has ever found themselves returning to Psalm 23 during a difficult season, this book offers an opportunity to slow down and rediscover words that may be familiar — but still have something new to say.
And perhaps that is the beauty of Scripture: sometimes the passage we think we know best is the very passage God uses to meet us in a place we have never been before.
The themes explored in the book are also developed further through Gerhard’s The Shepherd’s Journey podcast, available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and TuneIn.
Sometimes the journey is uncertain. But the Shepherd is faithful.
