Dear Friend

I am writing to let you know that FOR SA has published a Religious Freedom Scorecard on our website.

This gives an infographic showing how the various political parties voted over the five-year lifespan of this Parliament on legislation where FOR SA had concerns that religious freedom was under threat.  We trust that you will find this Religious Freedom Scorecard helpful and that it will be one factor that you take into account in your decision on who to vote for in the provincial and national elections that are taking place on 29 May.

Watch this introductory video for a quick overview of the Scorecard:

Thank you for your support!
As you know, FOR SA has staged multiple public engagement campaigns to give people an opportunity to “Have your say!” on proposed legislation.  We want to say a BIG thank you for the wonderful support you have given us.  As a result, literally tens of thousands have participated in these campaigns.  This has been highly effective in support of our efforts to amend and improve the final versions of Bills that became law and has helped ensure that the right to religious freedom is protected and upheld.

How do people use or interpret the Religious Freedom Scorecard?
Simply click on the button above, to go to the landing page and view the infographic. This names the different pieces of legislation, with a column to indicate FOR SA’s viewpoint. The top row lists the major political parties, with a column indicating how they voted (or not) on each piece of legislation.

Underneath the infographic, the name of each piece of legislation is listed, with a + sign. Click on the + sign to open up a short summary of its status, FOR SA’s concerns and a graphic line showing how the various parties voted.

Does FOR SA recommend any political party?
No — FOR SA is politically neutral. We are willing to work with any political party. To this end, over the past five years we have met with many political parties to lobby them with our religious freedom concerns – and to ask them to support our positions.

FOR SA has endeavoured, to the best of our ability, to reflect accurately the political parties’ positions on the various bills listed. In this regard, we have relied on the Hansard, which is Parliament’s official written record. When a party’s position or voting was not sufficiently clear, we opted not to indicate whether it was for or against a piece of legislation.

This infographic does not indicate why the different parties cast their vote a certain way, although it is simple to see how a party vote aligns (or not) with FOR SA’s concerns.
