FOR SA’s Legal Counsel, Adv Nadene Badenhorst, talks about Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in public schools in 2021.

She explains that, while Sexuality Education is a mandatory component of Life Orientation / Life Skills (a compulsory subject in the CAPS curriculum), schools are not obliged to use Government’s Scripted Lesson Plans (SLPs) in teaching Sexuality Education.

The Minister of Basic Education has already stated that schools have the freedom to choose for themselves which resources / material they want to draw from in the teaching of Sexuality Education.

As such, parents and teachers are encouraged to engage the School Governing Body (SGB) before the end of this year, with a view to recommending resources / learning material that are both CAPS compliant and cognisant of family and community values.

A list of (some of these) resources / learning material is available here and assessed here for CAPS compliance.
