When Maria was 14 years old, her uncle sexually assaulted her. She was too afraid to tell anyone, but when a bout of malaria landed her in hospital, the doctors informed her that she was HIV positive. The news spread through her village and she had to leave school.
One day, Maria heard a program on Victory FM, FEBA Mozambique’s radio station in Cuamba, about people who live with HIV. She contacted the station to share her experience. Today, she is one of the program’s presenters.
Mozambique has one of the highest HIV rates in the world. More than 12% of people between the ages of 15 and 45 live with the virus, and it is more prevalent among women than men.
FEBA Mozambique’s HIV awareness program started at the beginning of 2025 and currently has about 18 000 listeners. It is produced at Victory FM, but broadcast throughout Central Mozambique on FEBA’s Impact FM and Zambezi FM (both in Zambezia Province), and Voice of Hope (Sofala Province).
Program presenters conduct interviews with people who are HIV positive. They share how they contracted the virus, how people responded to their diagnosis, and how FEBA’s discipleship program helps them to overcome their situation. According to Director Bright Sonjera, the program has encouraged others to speak openly about their experiences.
“People who are HIV positive are still treated badly by their families,” he says. “But this is improving thanks to our broadcast.”
