Most South Africans believe leprosy disappeared long ago, but the truth is that leprosy still haunts our beautiful country today, quietly affecting some of our poorest and most vulnerable neighbours. Left untreated, leprosy damages the peripheral nerves, like the “funny bone”, causing the loss of protective sensation in the hands, feet, and eyes. This leads to injuries, infections, disability, and sometimes blindness – all because victims of this cruellest of diseases cannot feel pain.

Free treatment for patients

Yet there is hope. Early treatment can stop the disease in its tracks, and thanks to the generosity of believers like you, treatment and all the services provided by the Leprosy Mission are completely free. This is good news for our patients, as most of them are too poor to afford healthcare.

Remarkable care for one another

Recently, one of our patients, Albert, underwent delicate surgery to save the sight in his left eye. His right eye could not be saved – but God opened a different door. During his recovery, another leprosy patient – who also struggles with eye problems – lovingly cared for him, applying drops to his left eye every day. Their surgeon told us he was bowled over by the tenderness, compassion, and Christian love shown between the two men. This is remarkable, as all too often when people develop leprosy, they are abandoned by friends and family and sometimes, even by healthcare workers.

Helping those who need it most

We are reminded of Jesus’ words, “What-ever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me” (Matt 25:40). You can make this miracle of hope possible. Please prayerfully consider giving a donation to the Leprosy Mission Southern Africa and help protect sight, restore dignity, and bring Christ’s love to those who need it most.

URGENT PLEA

In particular, Albert returns in the next few weeks for follow-up surgery. Your help with covering the cost of Albert’s hospital admission will be greatly appreciated.
