Pastor Raynor “Ray” McCauley, the founder of Rhema Bible Church, passed away peacefully at his home on October 8, 2024, surrounded by his family and loved ones at the age of 75.

From humble beginnings to a leading congregation
Born in 1949, Ray founded Rhema Bible Church in 1979 in his parents’ home with only 13 people in attendance. His vision and dedication led to the growth of one of South Africa’s largest churches today.

A leader in faith and social change
Beyond his role as a church leader, Ray was also a champion bodybuilder, author, and a key figure in South Africa’s peaceful transition from apartheid, advocating for unity and reconciliation.

A tribute from the nation’s leaders
President Cyril Ramaphosa and other leaders paid tribute to Pastor McCauley, acknowledging his profound impact on both the spiritual lives of believers and his contributions to the nation’s moral and social fabric.

President Ramaphosa paid tribute, “Pastor Ray’s passing leaves our deeply spiritual nation bereft of a remarkable leader whose impressive legacy lives on in the faith of hundreds of thousands of believers within and beyond the Rhema community.”

Committed to service until the end
Even after stepping back from active church duties, Ray continued to serve the Christian community with unwavering commitment, guiding and inspiring others in their spiritual journey.

A lasting legacy of faith and unity
Pastor McCauley’s life and ministry were defined by his passion for spreading the Gospel and his dedication to social justice. His influence will continue to be felt in the lives he touched and the communities he strengthened.

Looking ahead to memorial arrangements
Pastor Ray’s legacy will be celebrated in the hearts of the faithful and in the ongoing work of the church he founded. We offer deep condolences to Zelda McCauley, Ray’s children and family, the extended family, and the large community of the Rhema Bible Church.

  1. I have had a privilege to read these stories on this month’s issue . It is encouraging to read about people who are seeing the power of the Gospel and leave what’s fake and commit to the Lord (who is real). The story of Pastor Sore shows us the fact that we are privilege to live in the Western world (if you like). We practice our faith without fear but others are not that privileged. Many thanks
