Between 7 and 11 February, the southern region of Mozambique experienced heavy rains – up to 100 mm in 24 hours – which led to widespread flooding in the Maputo province. The National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk reduction (INGC) reports that, as of 17 February, 43,426 people (8,685 families) have been affected by flooding, with ten dead and 16,588 displaced. Five thousand of the affected people are part of our FEBA listener clubs in Mozambique.

Furthermore, our director in Mozambique reports that numerous children have been left without shelter and that resources to help the kids are scarce.

The province has suffered significant damage: at least two bridges have been washed away, 300 km of roads left impassable and a further 580 km damaged. This is proving a difficult challenge for our FEBA Sofala team, whose members assist in the villages where aid is most needed.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), more heavy rains – as much as 50 mm – can be expected between 18 and 21 February in the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane, Manica and Sofala.

In addition to the heavy flooding, the threat of cholera increases, which may have a devastating effect on the people of Mozambique.
