A powerful outreach event at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah, recently drew thousands of attendees, many of whom responded to the Gospel and came forward in faith. The one-night gathering, organised by Harvest Crusades under the leadership of Greg Laurie, offered worship and a clear message of hope in the wake of tragic events on the campus.

Laurie explained that the event was brought forward unexpectedly after the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at UVU. He and his team contacted the university, which agreed to host the outreach on short notice. Traditionally planning takes many months, but this time it was arranged in just six weeks.

The event opened with a tribute to Kirk’s faith and legacy. Laurie emphasised that, despite the tragedy, the Gospel of Jesus Christ offers transformation and purpose. “Our prayer is that this event will remind people that evil does not have the last word; Christ does,” he said.

Musical worship was led by prominent artists including Chris Tomlin and Phil Wickham. Laurie’s message directed attention away from material solutions and toward a relationship with God through Christ. He referenced the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15) to illustrate God’s heart for those who feel lost or lonely.

Hundreds of people responded at the altar for prayer, seeking forgiveness, hope and renewal. Laurie cited recent data indicating Bible sales rose significantly and church attendance increased in the aftermath of Kirk’s death, interpreting these as signs of spiritual hunger.

From a South African viewpoint, this event reminds us that tragedy often opens doors for the Gospel to be proclaimed. Amid difficult times, the invitation to hope and renewal remains urgent here as well. May we be ready to step into such moments and see lives changed for the glory of God.
