This testimony follows the life journey of Jordyn, a 28-year-old digital marketer, podcast producer, and musician based in Cape Town. Growing up in a family of pastors, she was introduced to Jesus at a young age, but struggled with perfectionism and an eating disorder. Through her journey, Jordyn learnt the power of dying to self and trusting in God’s divine plan.

Q. Tell us more about your family background
I grew up in Pietermaritzburg. My parents, grandparents, and the majority of my aunts and uncles are pastors – so we ‘grew up’ in church. What a privilege to serve and go on missions as a family. We’re very close and very loving.

Q. Navigating to find Jesus yourself, what was that journey like?
What an adventure! My parents led me to the Lord as a four-year-old – I was very devoted to Him until around grade nine when I had a wobble. I fell in love with Jesus all over again after leaving the past behind at the end of high school.

Q. What lessons have you learnt?
Definitely the power of dying to self! Like a seed that must be buried, so was I when I came to Cape Town. It was a hard reset – it was exactly what I needed. My dreams, friendships, pride, my love for Jesus, and trust in His divine plan were all tested. However, I found new life and eight years later, I am a completely new person.

Q. What mistakes did you make?
I believed the lie that I must be perfect to be loved. I struggled with an eating disorder for seven years because of this. I hated my body for so long. The problem with being hypercritical of yourself is that you project that upon others. A big mistake.

Q. What role does family play in making important decisions?
Family is extremely important. I consult my family about all the decisions in my life. From whom to date, where to apply for jobs, to what car to buy. My family are my wise advisors. They know me so well and love me so much. God puts us in families to have that kind of support.

Q. Tell us about a hard situation you have overcome?
I thought that I had found ‘the one’ after ten years of singleness, and it turned out I hadn’t. It was a very painful period in my life – letting go and being obedient to what God was saying (a big NO). I overcame it by declaring the truth of God’s Word over my situation and eventually wrote my debut single, Streams in the Desert, based on Psalm 78:16.

Q. How important is Jesus to you in daily decisions?
He’s the most important advisor. From the little to the big things, He’s interested in it all. In every place I go and decision I make, I want to feel the smile of Jesus.

Q. What is next for Jordyn?
I’m so excited to expand my brand. I have a real passion for young women who have faced similar challenges to me. I want to give those girls hope through music, clothing, and conversation. Follow me on Instagram @jordyncreates_ to join me on my journey.
