It is 14:00 in Ntaja, Malawi, when a group of people gathers around a small radio. One of them – the moderator, who is responsible for operating the radio – finds FEBA’s channel, Litala FM, and everyone settles in to listen to the next instalment of the discipleship program.
What makes this astonishing is the fact that many of them are Muslim.
“Many Muslims love to hear the series of lessons,” says Pastor Amos Phiri, FEBA Malawi’s director and a former Yao Muslim himself.
FEBA Malawi’s discipleship efforts focus on Yao Muslim communities in places such as Ntaja, Nsanama, and Mbanila, and make use of radio and audio Bibles to bring the program to their listeners. The radio program, which airs at 14:00 every day, serves as an introductory course and is based on the Discovery Bible Study plan. The complete discipleship program is loaded on audio Bible devices, which are then distributed to listener clubs with 10-15 listeners each, who gather at appointed times to work their way through the lessons.
The goal of FEBA Malawi’s discipleship program is to give new believers a deeper understanding of the Bible, while also teaching them how to reach others with the gospel. Listeners complete four modules – Basics, Devotion, Doctrines, and Development – with lessons covering topics that range from the importance of belonging to a church and studying the Word, to the Holy Trinity, and how to start and lead a small group at church. The entirety of the fourth module is dedicated to active disciple-making, teaching listeners how to evangelise, do effective follow-up, and moderate a group discussion.
Each lesson leaves room for discussion and practical application. When the group cannot arrive at an answer to a question, they contact Pastor Amos.
FEBA Malawi’s discipleship program is bearing fruit. The headman of a village in the Machinga district, who has established 20 listener clubs since coming to faith in Christ, said, “Our village today is willing to join others in bringing people to Christ through media.”
FEBA Malawi currently has more than 24 000 listener clubs registered in Malawi and about 320 in Tanzania, where Yao people also listen to Litala FM’s broadcasts. FEBA’s volunteers have also planted 22 churches in Yao communities so far.
