I had the privilege of speaking at the “Mighty Families Festival” in Bloemfontein on the weekend of 16 – 18 March. Arlene and I returned home grateful to God for this experience.

I spoke on “The Blessing of Marriage and Family” on the Friday evening. However, we decided to stay the weekend to  participate in the rest of the festival and enjoy the inspiring ministry.

As a result of the topics I addressed in my sermon, many people from different backgrounds confided in me about the struggles they face in their marriages and families. I had the opportunity to offer counsel but more importantly, to pray with these precious people.

Although I am familiar with consequences of divorce and family breakdown, I realised how devastating family dysfunction is to men, women and children. Our Churches are filled with hurting and broken people too afraid to talk about their personal struggles.

Former AFM president, Dr Isak Burger delivered a profound sermon on scriptural and moral absolutes that brilliantly summed up the current dysfunction of contemporary society.

The FPI TV crew are working flat-out to get this sermon broadcast on “Salt & Light” on TBN In Africa on Sunday 25 March at 6pm. Dr Burger not only speaks as a veteran Christian leader but more importantly, as a father – which is desperately needed in our fatherless society.

Please make a special effort to view this program and share it with family and friends.

Cape Town is preparing for the “It’s Time” Prayer Day in Mitchells Plain on Saturday 24 March 2018. I recently interviewed Angus Buchan about his motivation for this event.

Uncle Angus believes it is Cape Town’s time to gather together to pray and ask God to break the drought in the W/Cape. He stressed, we must also pray that God will break the curse of poverty, gangsterism, prostitution, drug and alcohol abuse and other social ills ravaging our communities.

I am always encouraged when the Body of Christ gathers together to stand in the gap for the city and nation and repent and pray. Prayer is still the Church’s most powerful weapon.

However, as a result of my work at Family Policy Institute I am painfully aware that all the social ills we will be praying into at “It’s Time” are the result of divorce and family breakdown.

It is critical we repent of our sins and pray into these issues. But prayer alone cannot solve these problems. If the Church fails to focus attention on the growing catastrophe of increasing rates of divorce, fatherless homes and family breakdown – our current dysfunctional social environment will deteriorate even further with ominous warnings for the Church and society.

The Psalmist asks, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Ps 11:3.

Marriage and the family are the foundations of society. Tragically however, South Africa’s foundations are crumbling. We must pray but we must also act to restore family life.

Strong families, stable communities, prosperous nations! There are no alternatives.
