In a world marked by deep divisions and systemic injustice, the call for equitable care is louder than ever. Many communities remain trapped in cycles of poverty, violence, and marginalisation – unable to experience the fullness of life that God desires for all His creation. As followers of Christ, we are not only called to proclaim the Gospel, but to live it out – advocating for justice, restoring dignity, and standing with the vulnerable.
Living out the Gospel of justice and righteousness
Missional University is committed to equipping believers to confront global justice vulnerabilities from a Biblical, missional perspective. Through training and mentorship, the university prepares Christians to serve their communities with a deep understanding of justice, compassion, and transformation rooted in the Gospel. Equitable care, as understood by Missional University, is more than meeting immediate needs – it is about breaking down the systemic barriers that prevent individuals from living with dignity. It seeks to restore justice and fairness to social systems, empowering believers to be agents of lasting change in both local and global contexts.
What is equitable care?
Equitable care is grounded in the Biblical call to justice. Proverbs 31:8 urges us to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves”, while Micah 6:8 reminds us to “act justly and love mercy”. It is not simply a matter of charity or relief, but a commitment to ensuring that no one is excluded from the opportunity to thrive, regardless of background, race, or status. In practice, this means addressing the root causes of inequality and restoring what has been broken. Missional University focuses on equipping Christians to integrate faith and justice in their personal and professional lives, preparing them to challenge injustice with wisdom, grace, and practical solutions.
Justice vulnerabilities and the Gospel
Globally, injustice often acts as a barrier to the Gospel. When people are denied basic human rights or live in fear and insecurity, it becomes difficult for them to fully engage in faith and spiritual growth. Missional University highlights several areas of justice vulnerability that require urgent attention:
- Human rights violations are widespread, including the denial of economic and social rights, education, fair migration policies, and protections for the elderly, women, and youth. Racism, lack of religious freedom, and restricted freedom of speech and association are still realities for many.
- Environmental justice concerns also persist. Many communities are deprived of clean water, sanitation, and access to sustainable living conditions – basic rights that should be protected but are often neglected.
- Failures in community policing contribute to widespread issues like human trafficking, sexual and domestic abuse, violent extremism, and organised crime. Without accountability and fair law enforcement, communities remain vulnerable and justice inaccessible.
- Personal and public security is threatened by unlawful detentions, terrorism, and forced disappearances. Where safety is compromised, individuals live in constant fear – robbing them of peace, stability, and the ability to flourish.
Facing injustice with faith
South Africa’s history of racial segregation and inequality continues to shape its present. Deep socio-economic disparities have created an urgent need for restoration. Yet, amidst these challenges, believers are rising with a renewed mission. Christians across the country are engaged in transformative work – responding to injustice not just with words, but with bold, Gospel-driven action.
Justice-focused ministry
Ministries are stepping into the justice space with vision and resolve. Christian legal aid clinics provide support to the disadvantaged, while advocacy organisations promote religious freedom and defend victims of injustice. These efforts extend to prison ministries and restorative justice initiatives, where the focus is not only on punishment but on healing, rehabilitation, and reconciliation through a redemptive, Gospel-centred witness. Community policing initiatives led by Christians are helping to rebuild trust in law enforcement and protect vulnerable groups from crimes like human trafficking, sexual abuse, and gang violence. These efforts are often grounded in partnerships between churches, law enforcement, and local leaders.
Skilled professionals in Christian circles are also contributing through criminal investigation, behavioural profiling, and fraud detection. These individuals apply their expertise to uncover corruption, expose exploitation, and ensure accountability – demonstrating how faith and vocation can intersect to serve justice while seeking “the welfare where I have been sent” (Jer 29:7). Environmental justice is another area of growing concern. Christian advocates are challenging irresponsible environmental practices, defending communities affected by pollution and land degradation, and working towards sustainable solutions that honour both people and God’s creation. Through these ministries, believers are becoming a sanctuary for the vulnerable, a voice for the voiceless, and a force for justice in every sphere of society.
