A Powerful Book by Mozambican missionary and Bible translator Dr Stuart Foster will hit South African shelves in March.
Highly Favoured distills the African-born author’s thirty plus years’ experience on the mission field into a succint treatment of the promise that the Christian life holds.
“During my work on the Elomwe translation of the Bible, I was struck by how often the word ‘covenant’ features in Scripture,” Dr Foster said. “It is not a common word, so I studied what God’s covenant-making with his people entails, and it completely blew my mind.
“I was astonished at the level of God’s commitment towards his people and the amount of favour He gives us. God’s favour is often surprising, but always surer and better than we imagine. And harder.”
Dr Foster is no stranger to hardship. He and his wife lost their middle child to malaria at the age of seven, suffered serious sickness themselves, and lived through years of devastating civil war in one of the poorest parts of Mozambique. Yet, he says, God has blessed them with joy beyond their circumstances in the midst of these difficulties.
Although a fairly modest 128 pages, Highly Favoured brims with content and can be explored from many angles: the big story God is telling in Scripture, his commitment towards his people, the nature of a covenant, marriage as a prime example, the problem of hardship, and the role of Jesus and the sacraments. The book is dotted throughout with anecdotes from the author’s experiences in the mission field, where he has served since 1986.
One review described Dr Foster’s book as a polished diamond. “It refracts the light of the Gospel differently at every turn, yet all the various facets come together in a brilliant whole to make the covenant-making God infinitely attractive.”
