UK Christians are more likely to believe prayer has a positive impact on British life than American Christians’ prayer on American life, the findings of a new poll have revealed.

The poll, conducted by Savanta ComRes and commissioned by The Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer, found that more than two thirds (71%) of active Christians believe prayer has a positive role to play in modern British life, compared to 56% who believe it has the same impact in modern American life.

The findings, which sampled 2075 UK adults, also found that almost 1 in 3 (28%) of the general population thought that prayer had a positive impact on American life, with slightly more (35%) believing prayer was positive for British life.

Richard Gamble, founder of the Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer, said: “Prayer has historically been central to both British and American culture. Ever since the pilgrims embarked on that epic voyage on the Mayflower, there has been documented impact of the power of prayer. But perceptions of prayer have waned in recent years—it has become increasingly sidelined in British culture and increasingly so in the States.”

Young people were more likely than those 55 years or older to believe prayer had a positive impact on American life—33% of those aged 18–34 years old said they thought it has a positive role to play, compared with 23% of those in the older generation.

Gamble continued, “We are seeing a greater spiritual engagement through this data in younger generations. They are more open to prayer and to being a part of church communities. Whatever age, we need to ensure those in every generation realize the important role prayer can play in modern life.”

The Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer is new national landmark which will eclipse the size of the White House and aims to profile a million answered prayers on a site 90 miles north of London. The public art piece will stand at 169 feet and is expected to attract 300,000 visitors each year, contributing $12 million to the economy.

Bill Johnson, Senior Leader of Bethel Church, Redding, CA, commented, “I want to encourage everyone to take your answered prayer and send it to Eternal Wall so that the people of God, all over the world, can be encouraged by what’s happened in your life.”

Construction begins this year and the site is set to open in early 2023. A crowdfunding appeal is being launched this month to fund the remainder of the $16m project.

Gamble added, “Every single one of a million bricks represents a story of answered prayer to make hope visible to all who see this Christian monument. When visitors get close up they will see these bricks and will be struck with the realization that each one has a story attached. It will point them to the God who answers.”
