I started last year with lots of resolutions. I wanted to join the gym (as everyone does in January), I wanted to improve my sleep, and – most importantly – I wanted to be consistent. In a world that is constantly changing, I wanted to stand firm. My motto was “new year, same you”. And while I’m embarrassed to admit that I failed at my first two resolutions, I found the call for consistency an easy one to follow. It was a blessing that helped me not to chase new things, but to remain firmly rooted in God’s Word and His call for my life.
There’s something about a New Year that makes us feel like we need to start over completely. New goals, new habits, new pressures. And while fresh starts can be good, this year I’ve found myself moving away from the hustle of goal-setting and gravitating instead towards clarity. Not ambition. Not resolutions. But vision – Godly vision.
Don’t just reset – refocus
The world tells us to chase productivity and self-improvement. But before we fill our calendars and commit to 12-step goals, maybe we need to pause and ask: “Lord, what do You want me to focus on this year?” There’s power in surrender. It’s not about doing more – it’s about seeing more clearly. What has God already placed in front of you that needs your full attention? That’s where your energy should go.
Let vision come from God
Sometimes we feel aimless or overwhelmed at the start of a new year because we’re looking for answers in the wrong places. Vision doesn’t come from social media, your friends’ goals, or someone else’s highlight reel. It comes from time spent in God’s presence. It comes from seeking Him in prayer, worship, and the Word. And when He gives you a clear sense of focus, it might surprise you. His vision for your year might be quieter than you expected – or bigger than you imagined.
Clarity brings peace
One thing I’ve noticed is that clarity brings calm. My resolutions were adding stress to my life, and each month I felt like I was falling further behind by not fulfilling them. But when I chose to drop the goals, and to focus only on consistency, it was as if a weight had been lifted. When you know what God wants you to focus on – even if it’s just one simple area of obedience – it takes the pressure off. You don’t have to be everything. You don’t have to do it all. You just have to walk faithfully in what He’s called you to. That’s where peace lives.
Choosing obedience
This year, I’m not chasing outcomes. I’m choosing obedience. I’m asking God to clear away the noise and help me see what really matters. If you’re doing the same, you’re not behind. You’re on holy ground. May 2026 be a year of devotion and dedication to Christ and to His holy Word. Wherever He may lead you, trust in Him fully.
