The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) is proud to announce the launch of its “Rise from the Ashes” campaign. This campaign stands as a beacon of hope for animals affected by disasters across South Africa.
Our nation has faced unprecedented challenges with numerous disasters threatening both human and animal lives. The NSPCA’s Disaster & Emergency Rescue Fund, crucial for responding to such crises, has been depleted significantly. The “Rise from the Ashes” campaign aims to rebuild and fortify this fund, ensuring that the NSPCA can continue its vital work in responding to animals caught in disasters. We need to raise R400,000 to contribute to the Fund.
Supporters are encouraged to donate in lieu of a gift this festive season, or to donate in memory of a loved one or pet. Supporters will form part of our ‘400 Club’ – a prestigious group of people, supporting the NSPCA Disaster & Emergency Rescue Fund.
In 2023 alone, the NSPCA responded to significant disasters, such as devastating fires in Vryburg and surrounds in North West , as well as in Daniëlskuil in the Free State; the animal welfare crisis in Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay, Northern Cape; major floods in Buffelsrivier and Kommaggas, also in the Northern Cape; further fires in Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad, North West, as well as in Brandford, Free State.
Last year saw the tragic Jagersfontein dam wall collapse, where our teams had to work through the sludge and literally pull animals from the mud. Fires were once again problematic, having responded to fires in Ashkham, Groot Mier and Klein Mier in the Northern Cape, as well as in Groot Marico, Swartruggens and Ventersdrop in North West. During April 2022, floods ravaged through Kwa-Zulu Natal, necessitating our response to ensure that all affected animals were brought to safety.
The ‘Rise from the Ashes’ campaign is a rallying call to all compassionate individuals. The disasters the last two years have highlighted the critical need for a robust Disaster & Emergency Rescue Fund. We are determined to rebuild, and with the support of donors across the country, we can ensure that no animal is left to suffer in the aftermath of such tragedies.
