“There is no doubt that the greatest need in Africa is Bibles.”
This clear and urgent call from Dr Peter Hammond and the team at Frontline Fellowship sums up the heart behind their long-running Literature4Africa ministry – a project that has faithfully distributed Christian literature across the continent for more than two decades.
In a recent prayer and praise update, the ministry shared their deep gratitude to the Lord and their supporters for enabling the shipment of Gospel literature into some of Africa’s most spiritually needy regions. “We are very grateful for all the shipments of Bibles and books which have been entrusted to us over the years,” the team writes. “Over 200 containers in the last 20-odd years.”
Each year, Literature4Africa gives out more than 200 tonnes of Christian material – completely free of charge. These include Bibles, Gospel booklets, Bible study resources, Christian books and Sunday school materials. The ministry explains: “The Bibles, Gospel booklets, Bible study materials, Christian books and Sunday school materials donated to our mission have been a tremendous blessing to many hundreds of thousands of desperately needy Christians throughout Africa.”
Their recent shipments reflect this ongoing commitment. “By God’s grace we have been able to organise some shipments of Bibles in SiSwati to the Kingdom of Swaziland/Eswatini,” they report. These particular Bibles are especially needed by prison ministry workers in the region, who had specifically requested more material in the local language.
In addition, the ministry recently sent out a large batch of Zulu-language Gospel booklets to KwaZulu-Natal. “We recently shipped out over 100 boxes of Gospel booklets in Zulu to KwaZulu/Natal. That would include over 50,000 Gospel booklets,” they note.
Despite the materials being freely distributed, the operational costs involved in running this large-scale project remain significant. “Although we make these materials freely available, there are of course still operational costs that our mission needs to cover, including custom clearance, transport and delivery charges.”
The needs, however, far outweigh the challenges. “The needs are great. The opportunities are unprecedented,” Dr Hammond says.
