The head of South Korea’s intelligence services, Park Jie-won, has announced that he is advocating for Pope Francis to visit North Korea. He made the statement while attending a Catholic mass on July 6 in Mokpo, a town in Joella, South Korea.
Park Jie-won spoke during the service and stated that he would meet with Archbishop Kim Hee-Jung and Archbishop Alfred Xuereb to discuss Pope Francis’ visit to Pyongyang. He also asked the congregation to pray for peace on the Korean peninsula.
The mass was held to celebrate the Catholic church in Mokpo being awarded the title of minor Basilica. It is the first church to win the title in South Korea. There were 200 guests in attendance.
At a meeting in the Vatican in April, Pope Francis indicated that he was willing to travel to North Korea to meet the Kim regime. North Korea is widely known as the most dangerous country in the world for Christians. If he could visit, it would be a monumental occasion in a country that is so hostile to Christianity.
