What Is Happening?
On Sunday 18 September, relative calm was restored between neighbours Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, after the deadliest clashes in years. Despite a ceasefire agreement on Friday, both sides accused the other of continuing attacks using assault drones, rocket artillery, tanks, and mortars, including against civilian settlements. Almost 100 people were killed and over 100 more injured. An estimated 137,000 were evacuated from the conflict areas in Kyrgyzstan alone.
Why Is This Important?
Almost half of the 970-kilometre-long border between the neighbours remains contested, stemming largely from the way the Central Asian region was divided during the Soviet era. Since there does not appear to be a meaningful and lasting resolution to the dispute, the Church can pray for greater openness among Tajik and Kyrgyz people to the hope and peace offered by Jesus. Believers can also pray for protection and effectiveness for those making disciples in these Muslim-majority nations, where it is extremely difficult to follow and share about Christ
Pray
• for a lasting ceasefire and viable resolution to the border dispute
• for the ongoing turmoil to lead to an openness to know the Prince of Peace who gives eternal hope
• for believers to be protected, strengthened, and equipped to reach out under hostile circumstances
