What Is Happening?
On Monday 5 September, Liz Truss was announced as the United Kingdom’s new prime minister and assumed office on Tuesday. She faces the unenviable task of navigating multiple economic and political challenges.
Inflation has hit a 40-year high on the back of the energy crisis with resultant high living costs and warnings of an imminent recession. The ongoing war in Ukraine and strained relations with European neighbours will also require attention.
Why Is This Important?
Proverbs 31:8-9 says: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Freedom of religion in the UK allows the Church to be both visible and vocal in its response to societal needs. Many churches actively advocate on behalf of asylum seekers and lower-income families. Others have challenged parliamentary decisions on a variety of issues of concern, including environmental stewardship and responsibility. At last month’s 15th Lambeth Conference, the Archbishop of Canterbury said: “To be silent is to be one of the oppressors.”
