What Is Happening?
On Saturday 15 October, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced an immediate three-week lockdown in two high-risk districts in a bid to stop the spread of Ebola. All movement in and out of the districts will be halted. Places of worship, bars, gyms, saunas along with other entertainment venues will stay shut. Schools will remain operational.
Why Is This Important?
Uganda hosts the largest South Sudanese refugee population in the region. At the end of 2021, there were about 950,000 South Sudanese refugees registered in Uganda. Food, water, and medical care are in short supply in many of these camps. The Ugandan healthcare system is also not equipped to withstand an influx of Ebola cases. An Ebola outbreak in these areas could prove devastating to vulnerable refugee populations as well as the nation as a whole.
