My battle with cancer started in 2009 – it is a story filled with supernatural interventions by my heavenly Father. I invite you to take a little walk through my testimony with me.
Making my wishes known
Many years before I met my husband, Lou, he attended a Bible school here in South Africa and later spent another two years at one in Hawaii. One evening I shared my desire with him to attend a short discipleship course at the same Bible school. At the time we were involved in more than one business and Lou calculated what we would need to fulfil our obligations and be able to pay our staff to do so. The amount was quite large and my response was: “Really? That much? I will talk to Abba Father about it. ”
I know miracles still happen and they do not always come in the format we expect.
Blessing in disguise
During that time, I suddenly started gaining weight and it was a constant struggle to control my weight. It got so bad that I had to seek medical advice. After several tests, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My thyroid and other glands in my neck were then removed.
While Lou was visiting me in the hospital, he bumped into one of his old friends. When he heard about my cancer, he immediately mentioned that the policy he had sold to us included special cover in case I got cancer. Nearly six weeks later, the policy paid out exactly the amount Lou said we would need for Bible school! Shortly thereafter, we went to the Bible School with all our expenses covered.

‘Come in for further blood tests’
Let’s fast forward to 2020. My mother insisted that I must make an appointment for her for a mammogram. In the end, I arranged it for both of us. Lou and I were at a restaurant when my phone rang. It was to inform me that I had breast cancer and that I had to immediately come in for further blood tests. We finished our fish and chips in stunned silence.
Acceptance for the ‘new Nela’
The next few months were full of pain, fear, sadness, adjusting to a new lifestyle, and massive medical costs. I had a mastectomy, 16 chemotherapy sessions, 14 radiation sessions, and endured a lot of pain and discomfort, but still there was a presence of the Lord in everything I experienced. I lost all my hair, my body was transformed, my clothes had to be adjusted, and I had to learn to accept the “new Nela” in the mirror. I learnt to say, “This too shall pass.”
On the day of my last radiation session, it was as if I had reached the finish line. I know that without Lou’s support and acceptance, I would not have been able to stay the course. His love kept me steadfast.
My miracle showed up in the form of two bottles of Oxygen Products.
I wanted to talk to the Father
I have to go for blood tests every four months to make sure that I am still cancer-free. A few months ago the doctor looked at me, full of sympathy, and said: “Your counts have been increased again, please make an appointment so that we can discuss how we are going to treat the cancer.” I really did not think that I would have to face the news that the cancer monster had reared its ugly head again so soon. I walked to the car in silence and did not make the appointment. I told Lou that I did not want to have chemo again. I first wanted to talk to the Father and then make my decision. “Rather leave me be and let me live with it until the day I have to die.”
The Father always gave me the same Scripture: “Those that endure to the end” and “I will be with you.”

While I was talking to the Father so earnestly, an old acquaintance stepped into our lives again and told us about Oxygen Products. The number eight in the Bible is a “new beginning”. I say, “Thank You, Abba Father, for Your faithfulness.” I know miracles still happen and they do not always come in the format we expected them.
