The 2024 General Elections promises to be the most consequential since the advent of South Africa’s democracy in 1994. The birth of the nation’s new democratic dispensation held great promise. Tragically, however, the governing ANC appears to have abandoned its stated vision to govern the new democratic South Africa in the best interest of citizens – regardless of ethnicity.
Since the Zuma administration, the country has suffered accelerated political and economic decline. Rampant corruption has decimated almost every sector of society. The ANC’s descent into outright criminality has consigned a potential economic powerhouse to failed state status.
Most political analysts agree, South Africa may not survive another five years of ANC gross incompetence, rampant corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering. In short, citizens must make the collective decision to take back the country from the criminal networks destroying it.
The General Elections in 2024 will be different to the preceding Democratic Elections. Independent candidates, will for the first time contest the General Elections alongside political parties. Significantly, the recently enacted, “Electoral Act” faces a convincing Constitutional Court challenge from the ‘Independent Candidates Association’ – (who won the initial ConCourt case).
True to form, the ANC used its Parliamentary majority to amend the “Electoral Act” to favor itself. However, the amended Electoral Act will not pass constitutional muster – which means the legislation must be reworked to reflect the true spirit of the Constitutional Court ruling.
Encouragingly, apart from the ICA’s ConCourt challenge – that may produce a vastly improved electoral process that favors voters – there are several civil-society initiatives that potentially can convince voters to break with traditional voting patterns and seek out new political ventures.
The “Time2Rise” movement is building momentum across the country – inspiring citizens to unite for real change. A major gathering is planned 6 – 8 October in Bloemfontein where national leaders – including former Chief Justice Mogoeng, Mogoeng – will mobilize citizens to action.
The “OneSA” movement, headed by Mmusi Maimane is also increasing its national footprint. Its vision to rescue the nation from political, social and economic decline resonates with a young and growing demographic desperate for honest, visionary and stable governance.
Significantly, however, when South Africa faced certain peril prior to 1994, the Christian Church, represented by courageous leaders of conviction boldly opposed the apartheid system and inspired the South African people to peacefully work toward a just and equitable society for all.
The nation’s current situation is no different. South Africa again faces certain peril under the corrupt and destructive misgovernance of the ANC criminal network. Untold billions of tax-payers money has been, and is being looted with impunity. Critical state-owned-enterprises and democratic institutions have been hollowed out or run into the ground by corrupt & inept cadres.
No country on earth can indefinitely sustain the staggering levels of theft of public funds and gross mismanagement South Africa is currently enduring. This country boasts some of the best business leaders in the world in agriculture, mining, manufacturing and finance. South Africa is also a tourist mecca with massive potential for growth in this and every other sector.
Tragically, the nation is failed by its political leadership. But this must and can change by courageous & decisive civil-society leadership – a leadership desperately lacking in South Africa.
Religious and civil-society leaders were aware South Africa could not prosper under the apartheid system prior to 1994. That’s why so many labored for change despite the threats of incarceration. This nation will not survive under continued ANC corruption and mismanagement.
What leaders must acknowledge is that South Africa is fighting for survival. The future of
60 million citizens looks bleak and uncertain because a relatively small group of brazen criminals have transformed the national treasury into its personal feeding trough for self-enrichment.
Every ethical leader that loves South Africa and genuinely cares about the well-being of its people must take a bold and decisive stand and speak up for the future of the nation. People follow leaders. Where there is no vision (and decisive leadership) a nation perishes.
Beginning now, Christian and civil-society leadership must boldly advocate for honest transparent and efficient government. The ANC has repeatedly violated its oath-of-office to citizens. It must be rejected at the polls. This is the people’s prerogative – but leaders must lead.
God is in control of the destiny of nations. The Miracle of 1994 is waiting to be repeated in 2024. The God who made 1994 possible is still for us. Pray, Speak and Act for South Africa’s destiny!
