Before I retired, I was an architect. I spent many years involved in the design and construction of shopping centres in Botswana. I often had to drive long distances for work. It was dangerous to drive at night because of the wildlife and cattle that one could not see in the dark.

The road was long and straight
I had one major weakness – I loved speed. One night I was driving on the road after a long day. I decided to take a chance and drove from Serowe to Orapa. I was tired and therefore in a hurry to reach my destination. The road between the two towns is long, straight, and level. I opened up my car and drove at 200 km/h.

Did I imagine it?
While I was speeding along, I suddenly saw a hand appear under the rear-view mirror. It was warning me to slow down, which I immediately did. Your brain searches for explanations: Was it a reflection? What could it have been? I tried to convince myself that I was imagining it, but I prayed with my eyes open and asked what the meaning could be. After this I heard a voice saying: “Be careful.”

Vehicle approaching
This all bothered me so much that I decided to limit my car’s speed so that I could only drive at a maximum of 120 km/h. After a few kilometres I was about to start driving faster again, convincing myself that I had just been imagining it all. Then I saw bright lights approaching. The vehicle had just passed me, and the lights blinded me for a fraction of a second. When I turned my high beams back on, there were a number of cattle lying on the road in front of my car. I struck them with an almighty blow.

Unharmed, thanks to the Lord
The car was written off, but thanks to the Lord’s grace I escaped unscathed. Only my glasses fell off. I know that the Lord spared my life that day for a greater purpose. If I had hit the cattle at 200 km/h, I would not have survived. Praise the Lord.
