The well-known KwaSizabantu Youth Conference took place in Kranskop, KwaZulu-Natal, from July 3 to 9, attracting over 7,000 enthusiastic participants, including numerous day visitors and locals. It was incredible to see 57 buses journeying across South Africa, bringing young people together for this fantastic event. One dedicated bus even travelled an impressive 600 kilometers to Umtata to get attendees. This year’s inspiring theme, Wake Up, O Sleeper (Ephesians 5:14), resonated with many. On Sunday, July 8, the Mission experienced a fantastic turnout of over 10,000 people for the Thanksgiving Day event, highlighted by the presence of Prince Zuzifa (Shenge) Buthelezi, Inkosi of the Buthelezi clan.

In his welcoming message, Prince Zuzifa honoured the late Rev. Erlo Stegen, the founder of KwaSizabantu, as well as his father, the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. He spoke about the special friendship and brotherhood they shared when they were alive, which their children and grandchildren are now carrying forward. He praised the harmonious mass choir and reflected on the same sense of unity that his family has experienced at the Mission over the years, as well as during the 51 years of youth conferences, since 1974. He stated, “This is the essence of KwaSizabantu. This is the South Africa we want to see. We aspire to see this harmony not only at these youth conferences and at KwaSizabantu, but throughout the rest of South Africa.”
In line with the theme, the Prince advised the young people that it is all about doing the right thing at the right time and ensuring they are prepared for a spiritual awakening. He said, “When Jesus shines over our spiritual lives, he wants us to move away from sin. When we move away from sin, the darkness will leave us.”
The KwaSizabantu Youth Conferences are designed to inspire and empower the next generation, fostering a vibrant community where faith thrives and friendships grow. These conferences serve as a crucial catalyst for spiritual growth among young individuals. For the past 51 years, the KwaSizabantu events have provided a welcoming environment, twice a year during the school holidays, that enables attendees to deepen their relationship with God and foster a commitment to their faith. The conferences feature engaging and dynamic worship sessions, along with meaningful discussions that encourage young people to explore and solidify their beliefs. Counsellors are available to support those facing challenges and to assist anyone wishing to embark on their journey with the Lord.

What stands out in these discussions is the consistent theme of restoration. Many young people who once felt lost or disillusioned found hope and purpose during these conferences. They return home with a renewed sense of direction and a commitment to living lives that reflect their faith. These gatherings not only provide spiritual nourishment but also foster a sense of community and accountability, encouraging attendees to support one another in their faith journeys.
In July 2024, KwaSizabantu celebrated 50 years of conferences, marking 100 youth conferences attended by thousands of young people. The youth conference is one of the Mission’s community outreaches, offering it free of charge to young people who want to hear more from the Lord and need guidance. Three services are held daily, with only two services on Sunday. The youngsters can also participate in a sports day, which is designed to allow everyone to enjoy the fun activities.

The KwaSizabantu Youth Conference attracts thousands of young people from diverse backgrounds across the country. Many attendees volunteer to share their testimonies from the pulpit, which offers hope and encouragement to others facing similar challenges. I have interviewed numerous young people who regularly attend this conference. They often describe the atmosphere as energetic, filled with camaraderie and a strong sense of purpose, making the experience both memorable and impactful.
With decades of involvement in youth outreach programs, the KwaSizabantu Youth Conference is among the most successful and sustainable conferences in the country. Initially focused on preaching the Gospel and sharing testimonies, it has evolved over the years into a platform that has a profoundly positive impact on the lives of young participants in various areas, especially spiritually. Young people are also taught life skills that enable them to handle the challenges of life better.
