In an historic Resolution, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 1994 “The International Year of the Family.” It also decided beginning in 1994, to observe 15 May of every year as the “International Day of Families” – ratifying the importance of the family.
On 15 May 2022, UN member-states marked the 28th Observance of the International Day of Families and the 28th Commemoration of the International Year of the Family.
Family Policy Institute celebrates “International Day of Families” by working to defend and protect the natural family & promote the Biblical values that sustain and prosper family life.
Incredibly, despite the UN recognising the essential contribution of the family to human development and society, UN agencies like UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) spearhead global efforts to undermine and dismantle the natural family.
On 15 May 2019, I had the privilege of representing Africa at the “25th Observance of the International Day of Families” at the UN HQ in New York. My presentation focused on “The Significance of the Family in Africa.” Sadly, however, family life in Africa is deteriorating.
Tragically, despite the ANC regime being a signatory to several UN documents that affirm the vital role of the family, it is the most anti-life and anti-family government in Africa – actively promoting its ideology of death across a continent decimated by family dysfunction.
The ANC regime works closely with global sexual rights groups, UN agencies & liberal governments to advance the death cult of abortion & LGBTQ propaganda through social engineering in public policy and education – to the detriment of marriage and families.
South Africa is also a signatory to the UN “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” Article 16 states, “The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and entitled to protection from government and society.” Family breakdown is widespread in SA – and the root cause of almost every social ill in society – as a result of the State’s war on the family.
Fatherless homes are a national scourge in South Africa. Rising crime and violence are driven by fatherlessness. Research indicate gangsterism, prostitution, teen pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse, school drop-outs and sexual crimes are all linked to fatherless homes.
The ANC government devised the “Single Marriage Statute” policy primarily to equate
same-sex and transgender unions with monogamous heterosexual marriage in SA law. Redefining man, woman marriage is a disasterous policy with dire social consequences.

Marriage is a bedrock civil institution that served every nationality and culture for millennia. Only marriage between a man and a woman is ordered to pro-creation and uniquely fit for family life. The best available data prove children need the contribution of a father and a mother and thrive best on every social indicator when raised in a biological two-parent home.
US representative at the UN, Wade Horn explained why the family is fundamental: “Throughout the ages, political philosophers, social historians, and civic and religious leaders have praised the family as the foundation of the social order, the bedrock of nations, and the bastion of civilization…. The fact is that family is a universal and irreplaceable community, rooted in human nature and the basis for all societies at all times. As the cradle of life and love for each new generation, the family is the primary source of personal identity, self-esteem, and support for children. It is also the first and foremost school of life, uniquely suited to teach children integrity, character, morals, responsibility, service, and wisdom…. The state’s foremost obligation… is to respect, defend, and protect the family as an institution.”
Despite the mountains of evidence affirming the indispensable role of the natural family in human development and prosperity, the ANC regime has developed policies to redefine marriage, undermine parental authority and the nuclear family, indoctrinate children in education, degrade women in decriminalised prostitution and criminalise religious beliefs.
Family restoration does not appear to be a priority of the Church either. Psalm 11:3 poses the question, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Sadly, social foundations like Biblical truth, man, woman marriage and the natural family are disintegrating without a desperately needed and decisive intervention from the Bible-believing Church.
The UN observed the “International Day of Families” on 15 May with indifference. The world’s governments ignore the unfolding catastrophe of the “Demographic Winter” in which most nations suffer declining fertility rates and many are below population replacement levels.
Most nations in Europe are dying because individual demands are considered more crucial than the role of the natural family. Abortion “rights,” sexual “rights” and “self” has relegated the family to non-essential status. Ideological groups reject Biblical truth because it defines God’s blueprint for human relations – regarding the nuclear family as its enemy.
The South African family is crumbling because the Judeo-Christian worldview – the only system capable of undergirding strong/stable families – is diminished in the public discourse.
The health, stability and economic prosperity of a nation is determined by the strength of the family. As the family goes, so goes society. We ignore the plight of the family at our peril.
The Church of the living God, described as “the pillar and ground of the truth” in 1Tim 3:15 must actively and unapologetically lead the way in protecting and restoring the natural family.
And the most effective way to do this is by boldly proclaiming the truth that sustains it.
