“She says of herself, no one sees me…”
When life falls apart in ways you never saw coming, how do you respond? For Jeff Lewis, a man of quiet faith, the answer wasn’t despair but prayer, study, and eventually, writing. His latest book, The Spirit of Jezebel, was born out of years of hardship and spiritual searching. It offers a powerful look at the unseen forces that influence the world we live in.
Jeff’s journey began with a crisis
Within a short period, Jeff’s life unravelled and he found himself with nothing but a suitcase and a modest sum of money. “Often the deep insights into the things of the Spirit come about as a result of hardship or a crisis,” he reflects. Stripped of security and certainty, he turned to the Bible with renewed intensity, seeking to understand the spiritual dynamics behind his suffering. This period of searching led to his first book, From Bondage to Freedom. But one theme in particular – the spirit of Jezebel – demanded further exploration, and so his second book was born.
A different perspective
For many believers, the name Jezebel brings to mind the notorious queen of Israel – known in Scripture for her manipulation, idolatry, and cruelty. But Jeff’s book offers a different view. He explains that the “spirit of Jezebel” isn’t limited by gender or time; it’s a destructive spiritual influence that can take hold of anyone. As in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against … the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Jeff situates this battle in the unseen world, arguing that it remains just as relevant today as it was in Biblical times.
A dangerous spirit
In The Spirit of Jezebel, Jeff describes this influence as one that works in secret, seeking to undermine families, corrupt nations, and erode our spiritual well-being. What makes it dangerous, he suggests, is its subtlety: “This Jezebel says of herself, ‘no one sees me.’” By framing his exploration in this way, Jeff invites readers to consider the hidden forces at play in personal, social, and even global struggles.
Lack of pretence
What stands out about Jeff’s approach is its sincerity. He’s not a theologian or academic, but a retired man who runs a tennis club and manages an apartment block in Fish Hoek. His insight comes not from formal study, but from experience, faith, and a genuine openness to hear from God. As a result, his writing feels personal, relatable, and firmly anchored in everyday life.
An ongoing spiritual battle
The Spirit of Jezebel is more than a study of an ancient character – it’s a reflection on the ongoing struggle between good and evil, and a reminder to stay alert in a world that often overlooks the spiritual realm. For readers who want to understand more about the unseen side of faith, Jeff Lewis’ book offers a sincere and thought-provoking perspective.
Both The Spirit of Jezebel and From Bondage to Freedom are available in paperback and Kindle formats on Amazon worldwide and through Takealot in South Africa.
