On the 27th of January 2021 news broke that SAHPRA, SA Health Products Regulatory Authority, would allow limited “controlled and compassionate” access to the public of the drug Ivermectin to treat Covid 19. This was a milestone moment and victory for all pro Ivermectin supporters.

There was jubilation in the air last week from the pro-vaccine supporters in South Africa after receiving news that the first batch of one million AstraZeneca covid 19 vaccines had arrived last week and were received by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and President Cyril Ramaphosa at O R Tambo Airport. The jubilation was short-lived, though, as it was recently announced that the same vaccines were not effective against “mild or moderate infection”. Information just in also advised that the Chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Covid 19 vaccines, Professor Barry Schoub, has “suggested that the roll out of AstraZeneca’s vaccine should be suspended’. The Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize has since confirmed that the vaccine roll out would be temporarily suspended.

The Great Debate
Huge debates have been erupting across the globe with some arguing for the accelerated roll out of vaccines in all nations and others arguing for the rollout of Ivermectin, a known, tried and tested drug. Some of the debates have been vicious with some pro-vaccine supporters indulging in some cyber bullying and ridiculing and “vaccine shaming” non vaccine supporters into taking the drug. They’ve called non vaccine supporters names such as “conspiracy theorists” and have questioned the capacity of their reasoning powers. At the end of the day, we need to respect people’s human rights and rights of choice to make decisions. Nobody deserves to be ridiculed or humiliated just because their choices and decisions are different from yours. Let’s be encouraged to submit facts and statistics to present our cases and avoid ridiculing and name calling.

To Vaccinate or to Ivermectinate? That is the question.
The case for vaccines is uncertain. There are various types of vaccines, with each being alleged to function at different levels of efficacy. The case for vaccines in South Africa has certainly been dented by the recent discovery that their efficacy is questionable in relation to the SA Covid 19 variant. Vaccines, overall, have not been tried and tested and have no real record to show that they are effective. On the contrary, some reports in some nations are showing preliminary evidence of adverse reactions to the vaccine. In a recent move, Switzerland has banned the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine. The Swiss medical regulator did so on the basis that “There was a lack of data to reach conclusions on the efficacy of the Covid 19 vaccine.”

Ivermectin, on the other hand, has a proven record, having been used in many nations, including Nigeria, to treat diseases such as river blindness. Not only does it have a traceable record, but is cost effective and can be easily attained should the host nation pursue the Ivermectin route. South Africa needs to seriously consider the Ivermectin route now that the vaccine route has been suspended.

Vaccines have a limited efficacy in that they have they only have the “potential’ to stop an individual from contracting Covid 19. Available scientific information shows that individuals can still contract all types of Covid 19 even after receiving the vaccine shots.

Ivermectin, on the other hand, has a dual role. It has the capacity to deal with Covid 19 when it is in your body and to stop its replication and multiplication. It has the secondary ability to stop you from contracting Covid 19 when you ingest it as a prophylaxis.

We urge the South African government to refrain from putting the health and life of it’s citizens at risk and to consider what is best for its citizens and make decisions that will ensure that their livelihoods are guaranteed and ensured.

  1. I would query the “proven track record” claim relating to Covid 19 when the scientific community has purported otherwise
