The Family Counselling Centre (TFCC) and Far South Counselling (FSC) NPC, mental health support organizations based in Fish Hoek, Western Cape, are launching their first Community And Mental Health Convention for those who would like to network with and learn from like-minded individuals, professionals and community organizations.

Andrea Nettel, CEO/Director of TFCC and FSC is aiming to provide a networking space where those that deal with mental health issues in their respective fields, can benefit from meeting each other and discussing pertinent community and mental health issues.

Andrea says that although many services are duplicated, there are those that are missing. The hope of the convention is to unlock the disconnect and gaps between the private and public organisations, professionals and government institutions and start conversations and ask how organisations can help.

The two-day convention is being held on 19 and 20 August at the King of Kings Baptist Church in Sunvalley and will host exhibition stalls showcasing local organisations and business services throughout the convention, which is open to the public on Friday afternoon and a VIP screening of ‘Disconnected’ on Friday evening.

Saturday’s conference event will include presentations from various professionals including doctors, past principals, organisation heads, and includes an interactive panel discussion entitled “Post-pandemic mental fitness – What now?”

The Friday evening VIP screening of the moving documentary ‘Disconnected’ tells the unscripted stories of the people affected by suicide. The intention of this documentary is to lift the stigma of suicide for those who have lost loved ones as well as provide help for those suffering from depression and anxiety.

The two-day exhibitor’s package is R1,500 for general exhibitors and R960 for NGO organizations. This includes two tickets to the VIP screening and Saturday conference. Conference delegate packages are R680 and include one ticket which provides access to the stalls and VIP screening as well.

Pre-booking for the VIP documentary screening, with tickets at R150 per ticket, is essential for those who want to view the screening but cannot attend the conference.

“There are so many community and mental health needs right here on our doorstep,” says Andrea Nettel, founding director and counsellor, TFCC. “And, likewise, there are so many individuals and organisations who are both passionate about and able to respond to these needs and, in that, contribute to the well-being of the community.”
