Good News is all around us, we need only seek it out, especially on our beautiful gemstone of a continent – Africa. Spiritually dark and politically chaotic is Chad, a land-locked state in north- central Africa, the fifth largest country in the continent bordered by Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger. Much of the northern part, lies in the Sahara and the economy is mostly driven by the agricultural industry.
Throughout history the country is marked by both brief and extended periods of conflict with neighboring countries and internal factions. Chad remains plagued by political violence and recurrent attempted coups d’état. It is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world. Religiously the country is separated between the Muslim north and Christian south who often clash.
All over the world, and especially in the North African countries we work in, we’ve noticed that the pressure caused by the pandemic and ensuing economic decline is driving people towards seeking answers from God. In the process they are discovering Christ and recommitting their lives to Him. In Chad, more than 50% of the population is Muslim and the rest are mostly nominally Christian. The practice of the occult and animism are also very common. Home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups, Chad is considered unreached.
On 27 October 2021, our partner station, Radio Shahada in Chad, organised a Youth Camp in Mongo. The city of Mongo situated in the region of Guéra, is located in the northern part of the country, 405km away from where the station is based in N’Djamena.
As Ps Thomassin so eloquently described the journey; “The landscape with all its contours is difficult to define, sometimes it’s a vacuum of emptiness, and other times a savannah of confusion leading into luscious fields of cultivated land or wide-open spaces filled with wild plants.”
The event was attended by 500 eager young Chadians from N’Djamena and Mongo who were hungry to hear the word of God. A program was put together by Ps. Thomassin Gotingar, Station Manager of Radio Shahada that included Sermons, in depth Biblical teachings and Worship sessions.
Sessions were presented by different pastors and worship artists from around the country. In preparation for the event, a 21-day prayer chain was organised by the station, to encourage listeners to pray for the event. Many listeners joined and prayed earnestly.
Topics like the importance of self-discipline, being sincere in relationships, serving and the need for fatherhood were discussed at the camp. Street Evangelism was conducted on one of the camp days, where several non-believers gave their lives to Christ. At the camp itself, 24 souls were won.
