Last month, at the opening ceremony of the Olympic games, you would have noticed a significant uproar over the mockery of the Last Supper. This incident sparked anger within me, highlighting a troubling narrative: while inclusivity is championed for many groups, it often seems to exclude the Christian faith.

Differing responses from believers
Many Christians were outraged, while others believed we should respond with love and follow Jesus’ example. However, numerous Bible passages were quoted out of context, promoting a version of Christianity that seemed spineless. This is not the Christianity I read about in the Bible. In fact, when studying the Word, I see many instances where Jesus and Paul rebuked brethren and reminded sinners to repent. Jesus even called the Pharisees “a brood of vipers”, yet, when it comes to the Olympics, Christians were criticised for defending their faith.

How should Christians react?
This made me wonder, how many of us would allow someone to hurt, mock, or harm our families without defending them? Yet, when our faith is mocked, we urge one another to remain silent and respond with love. How should we handle such situations? In the Bible, Peter offers some clarity. He encourages believers to be prepared to explain their faith. In 1 Peter 3:15 he writes, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” This highlights the need to be knowledgeable about our faith and emphasises the respectful way we should engage with others. It doesn’t state to stay silent while people mock your beliefs, values, and Christianity!

The importance of a biblical foundation
Historical examples of Christian apologists demonstrate the power of defending the faith with scriptures and exemplary behaviour. One such figure is the Apostle Paul, who frequently engaged in public debates and discussions defending Christianity. In Acts 17:2-3, Paul is described as reasoning with people from the scriptures, explaining and proving that our Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. Paul’s method of using scriptures to explain and defend the core of Christianity illustrates the importance of biblical knowledge in apologetics.

Here are 3 points to ponder on defending Christianity
1 Base it on scripture. The Bible is considered the inspired Word of God and serves as the ultimate authority for Christians. Using scripture in defence of the faith ensures that arguments are grounded in truth, as described in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

2 Be prepared and respectful. 1 Peter 3:15 urges Christians to always be ready to explain their faith with respect. By being knowledgeable about scriptures, Christians can confidently and respectfully engage with others, providing reasoned answers and fostering understanding.

3 Be a living testimony. Matthew 5:16 encourages believers to let their light shine through good deeds, reflecting the teachings of Christ. Defending the faith through both words and actions demonstrates the transformative power of Christianity and serves as a powerful testament to its truth and relevance. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
