The annual Country Christmas Market at the Domino Servite School (DSS) in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands will take place on 6 and 7 November. It marks a strong start to the festive season and promises to be even better than in previous years, with a renewed focus on family and community.
The Christmas market is a country-style festive market, well supported by locals and visitors from afar. It’s a great outing for Christmas shopping, delicious food, and a wide variety of family activities. Visitors can expect handmade crafts, Christmas gifts, toys, sweets, and pre-loved treasures, making it easy to do all Christmas shopping in one venue. As in previous years, the market will feature a variety of food stalls, a sociable country market atmosphere, and outdoor activities to keep children busy.

This market has become part of the community’s shared identity in the remote Kranskop area. It is an important annual tradition that families look forward to, locals depend on, and the wider community takes pride in. It provides a place to meet, where families, friends, neighbours, and visitors can connect. It brings together people of different ages and backgrounds for a shared celebration, helping to build relationships and strengthen community spirit.
Beyond creating an opportunity to celebrate the season together, the market generates income for the school, showcases projects, and builds a customer base. It also creates meaningful family experiences for children, offering opportunities to make memories and establish traditions that can be repeated year after year. It also gives volunteers, the school, community organisations, and local groups opportunities to contribute their time and talents, work together toward a successful event, and build skills, confidence, cooperation, and pride while preserving the spirit of Christmas at its best.

But this market is valuable for DSS for another reason. It shows how a market can become more than a commercial event and a valued part of the community calendar. Beyond enjoyment, relaxation, discovery, and the chance to make special memories, it also fosters deeper connection, cooperation, and a tradition people can share. For DSS, it is an opportunity to showcase its values and strengths, engage with the wider public, and strengthen relationships with family, supporters, and visitors.
DSS is a Christian-based school that teaches its learners important values. Through this market, DSS learners can express service through hospitality, hard work, generosity, and collective effort.
Ultimately, the DSS Christmas Market is an investment in its community’s lives. It creates a space where commerce, celebration, relationships, and shared values meet, and South Africans need that right now. Its greatest achievement isn’t sales and numbers, but what people experience, what they contribute, and what remains in the community long after the event ends.
