On the 13th of September, 2022, Kenya stepped into a new era and dispensation with the swearing in of its fifth President, William Samoei Ruto. After serving for nine years as Deputy President to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Mr. Ruto stepped in to assume the highest office in the land. Five, is the prophetic number that symbolizes grace and there is hope in the Christian circles that God’s hand and grace will guide him and direct and order his steps.

When the election results were first announced, it almost seemed like a fairy tale story. How does a self confessed “village boy” who is said to have grown up selling chickens by the roadside defeat a person who comes from the great political Odinga dynasty. His opponent Raila Odinga,  was supported by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, son of former President Jomo Kenyatta, also from a daunting political dynasty. It seemed like he was facing an insurmountable mountain. In the natural, the odds were stacked up against him, but they were also stacked up against David when he went up against Goliath. We all know the ending of the David and Goliath story! David, a man described in Acts 13:22 as a man after God’s heart went on to become King and rule and lead Israel.

The election results were challenged by Raila Odinga. The Supreme Court in a unanimous ruling declared the elections free and fair thereby turning what appeared to be a fairytale into reality. The Court ruled that Mr. Ruto won the election with 50.5% of the vote, to Mr Odinga’s 48.8%.

Swearing In ceremony
On the 13th September, with his hand on a Bible, 55-year-old President elect Ruto (at the time) was sworn in at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani in Nairobi. He swore to preserve and protect the constitution of Kenya. About 20 heads of State from across Africa are said to have attended the event. Many scripture verses were quoted during the ceremony with Mr. Ruto having been quoted as saying “Standing here today is testimony that there is God in heaven. I want to thank God because a village boy has become the president of Kenya,”

A Praying man, a praying family
One of the videos that went viral after the elections, was a video showing President Ruto with close family and friends worshipping and giving God thanks and all the glory after the Supreme Court decision was announced.

Prayers did not only start after the win, though. Those who are close to President Ruto and his wife describe him as a man who loves God, has a close relationship with Him and lives a life of prayer. The Bible says in Matthew 7:16 that we shall identify true sons of God by their fruit. The fruit of the Spirit was glaringly obvious in President Ruto after he extended a hand of conciliation to Odinga and to his faction. He also pledged to work with all Kenyans regardless of their voting choice.

President Ruto is not the only praying person in his family. His wife, and now First Lady Rachel Chebet Ruto is described as a prayer warrior. A former teacher and now strong advocate for the further empowerment of women, she practices faith with works through her Joyful Women Organization.

The world is watching as God begins to place leaders who love God into positions of power. Former Tanzanian President , the late John Magafuli and President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi are men who have a relationship with God. We remain in prayer for them and trust God to direct their steps and to give them Luke 21:15 wisdom, divine wisdom that will outweigh the wisdom of their opponents and is irresistible and cannot be contradicted.
