On 15 August 2021, the Taliban, a radical Islamist military group, took control of Afghanistan. The impact on the small Afghan Christian community was immediate and severe.

“It was just like in Acts, chapter 8: ‘On that day a great persecution broke out against the church and all but the apostles scattered,” said a Front-Line Worker.

“Many first-generation Afghan Christians fled, but many are still serving through media back into Afghanistan.”

Some Christians remained in the country “like sheep among wolves,” said the Front-Line Worker, who knows of at least one Christian Afghan suffering in a Taliban jail.

Taliban rule has led to a sense of desperation in the country: “Afghans are in a place of turmoil, and many are turning away from Islam,” said the Front-Line Worker, who added that downloads of Christian material from several Afghan language sites have increased significantly.
