A survey conducted by the market and social research institute INSA-Consulere (Erfurt) on behalf of the Protestant news agency IDEA, shows that almost one in three Germans (31%) believe that God created the universe.

Meanwhile, 41% of the respondents do not believe that; one in four (25%) do not know what to think about it, and 4% did not respond.

Religion and politics
According to te survey, the greatest differences are found among believers: while a more than 70% of evangelical free church (Freikirchler) members believe that God created the universe, 43% of those asked who identify as Roman Catholics and 35% of Protestants from the national church (EKD) agree with the statement.

Among Muslims, almost 75% believe it. The percentage drops to less than 10% for those without religious affiliation.

Regarding politics, conservative CDU/CSU party sympathisers are the most likely to believe in God as the only creator of the universe (38%), followed by supporters of the Social Democratic (SPD) party (35%), the Greens (29%), the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party (28%), and the Left (26%).

Age, sex and location
The belief in God as the creator of the universe is “slightly more widespread” in the western federal states than in the east (32% compared to 26%) points out the survey.

Furtheremore, “men and women are roughly equal in their assessment of the question” (32% versus to 30%).

When it comes to age, the survey reveals that “agreement with the statement is significantly higher among younger respondents than among older ones”. Almost half of the 18 to 29-year-olds (47%) believe that God created the universe, followed by those who are 30 to 39 year-old (43%).

The lowest percentage is found among those aged 50–59 (20%), while almost 25% of the over 70-year-olds supported the statement.

The research institute INSA-Consulere (Erfurt) interviewed 2,006 adults between 5 and 8 September for the survey.
