The Budget’s fiscal framework report was adopted in Parliament on 2 April following a contentious vote. It paves the way for the ANC to hike VAT by 0,5 percent in 2025 and again in 2026. Personal income tax is not adjusted for inflation resulting in a stealth tax.
The passing of the ANC’s pro-corruption Budget signals billionaire President, Cyril Ramaphosa’s refusal to effectively combat and stop endemic corruption in South Africa.
President Ramaphosa launched the Government of National Unity (GNU) saying, “despite the achievements of 30 years of democracy and the work undertaken over the last 5 years to rebuild the economy, millions of South Africans remain poor and unemployed and live in a highly unequal society. “For a decade and a half, our economy has barely grown.”
“The GNU has resolved to dedicate the next five years to actions that will advance three strategic priorities,” he stressed. These are: to drive inclusive growth and job creation; to reduce poverty and tackle the high cost of living; and to build a capable, ethical and developmental state. President Ramaphosa said, the GNU has decided to place inclusive economic growth at the centre of the national agenda.”
Despite these stated priorities, Ramaphosa chose to consult with parties outside the GNU to advance a Budget that does not prioritise “inclusive economic growth” but rather the ANC’s job-killing socialist agenda. The World Bank and many others have warned Ramaphosa to change SA’s BEE, property rights and foreign policies to attract investment.
The ANC undermined the spirit and intent of the GNU by consulting external parties to get its way. The GNU’s mandate is to negotiate public policy because no single party holds a majority. But the ANC acts like it’s still the majority party – making a mockery of “unity.” It has become clear the role of the DA and other parties is used to keep the ANC in power.
As a result of the Budget debacle, ANC officials are demanding the DA be ejected from the GNU. DA officials also want to exit. Critically, however, top SA business leaders have written to President Ramaphosa and DA leader John Steenhuizen appealing to them to save the GNU. The collapse of the GNU they warn will cause irreparable harm to SA.
The announcement of the Budget vote and the conflict in the GNU rattled financial markets. The Rand suffered significant losses against the US Dollar and British Pound. SA taxpayers will earn less because of “bracket creep” and pay more because of the VAT hike.
While the Budget drama unfolds domestically, South Africa’s relations with the US appears to be deteriorating with alarming speed. A US Congressman introduced a Bill to review US Bilateral Relations with SA citing ANC corruption, Russian ties and state mismanagement.
The Bill suggests targeted sanctions against ANC officials because of “endemic high-level corruption, inability to deliver public services, mismanaging a range of state resources and threatening the SA people and the SA economy” – and many more crimes against citizens.
In addition to the threat the Bill poses to the ANC (and SA), Donald Trump announced his “reciprocal” tariffs on US trading partners last week. South Africa was hit with 30 percent tariffs on all exports to the US. The new tariffs effectively nullifies the AGOA benefits.
Following Ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool’s expulsion from the US, SA consul general in Los Angeles, Thandile Babalwa Sunduza, was expelled by the US State Dept. South Africa’s military attaché to Washington, Brigadier General Richard Maponyane was also recalled.
But the most damaging allegations come from a UK based judicial rights group who claim, “the ANC regime had prior knowledge of the 7 Oct Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel and supported its political strategy by facilitating access to the International Court of Justice.”
The Jewish Report writes, “South Africa is refusing to withdraw its genocide case against Israel despite pressure from the US. Tension between the two countries has led to cancelled military deals, a substantial funding cut, and future trade uncertainty.”
If the judicial rights group’s allegations are proven true, the ANC’s “human rights” grandstanding will be exposed globally. Its relations with the US and the EU will be damaged irreparably. Exposing the ANC’s criminal agenda will be the catalyst for change.
The ANC is gambling with the livelihoods of 62 million South Africans. Its insane economic and foreign policies are criticised globally. Tragically, the nation’s future is being held hostage by a corrupt and incompetent criminal enterprise masquerading as government.
Something must give. SA is being mismanaged to economic ruin. Billions are stolen by ANC cadres. Christian citizens must pray fervently that the confluence of recent events that sent shockwaves through the nation will provoke the change we so desperately need.
